On June 22, President Barrack Obama signed an historic bill giving the FDA oversight of the tobacco industry. Dr. Gregory Connolly, Interim Director of the Division of Public Health Practice and Director of the Tobacco Control Research Program and Geoffrey Ferris Wayne recently authored a paper in the "Online First" section of the Journal of Tobacco Control which shows that tobacco
manufacturers changed the ingredients and the design of their cigarettes
over time. The result, say the researchers, is that consumers who buy the same
brand of product are not made aware of how that product has been altered and what
effect those alterations might have on their levels of addiction or harm. The new legislation will allow the FDA to determine that
no tobacco product changes changes be allowed until they have been scientifically shown to reduce
addiction or harm. Dr. Connolly and Dr. Howard Koh are pictured above at the bill signing at the White House Rose Garden on June 22, 2009.
