Student Organizations

Student Goverment at HSPH (formerly known as the SCC)

The Student Government (HSPH SG) is the centralized student organization that acts on behalf of all the students of HSPH in matters concerning their education and welfare. Its members are elected representatives from each department or program that meet regularly to discuss issues and plan activities related to student life. The committee works with faculty and administration on school-wide issues, sponsors seminars and other education-related events, and plans social activities.

Africa Health Student Forum

The objectives of the Harvard School of Public Health African Health Forum are to:

  • Create an opportunity to discuss important issues affecting Africa in terms of health and development and bring them to the fore of academic and professional discourse within the Harvard community
  • Play an advocacy role where indicated to influence health policies and practices which are of concern in Africa
  • Promote the health rights of people, especially vulnerable populations
  • Create an opportunity to be involved with people and institutions working in Africa.

*These objectives may be achieved by planning internships and volunteer opportunities for people interested in working in Africa and by assisting in capacity-building in schools of public health & NGO’s.

AIDS Tank

AIDS TANK is a student group focused on Thinking, Action, Networking and Knowledge surrounding the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The objectives of the AIDS TANK are to:

  • Discuss issues relevant to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, in particular, those that arise in developing countries and in resource-poor settings
  • Be involved with people and institutions working on similar issues
  • Synergize efforts in the Harvard community

Asian Health Forum

The HSPS Student Asian Health Forum aims to: ·

  • Foster public awareness regarding health issues that affect Asian and Asian American communities through social, educational and community service events
  • Promote awareness about Asian cultures within the HSPH community
  • Provide opportunities for cross-cultural interactions among students, alumni, and faculty members from Asian, Asian-American, and other backgrounds
  • Provide opportunities for involvement with people and institutions in Asia
  • Provide opportunities to discuss important issues affecting Asia.
  • Provide opportunities for and assistance in collaboration between HSPH community and.other Harvard, non-Harvard and international organizations of similar interests.

Black Students Health Organization

The Black Student Heath Organization (BSHO) is a student run organization welcoming participation by students, alumni, faculty, staff and administration within the Harvard School of Public Health. Members have an interest in health issues affecting black persons throughout the African Diaspora.

The objectives of The Black Student Health Organization are to:

  • Provide community service and the improvement of student life at HSPH
  • Collaborate with community leaders, faculty, staff, administration and other student groups at HSPH
  • Launch independent initiatives

Chinese Student and Scholar Association

The Chinese Culture Club organizes activities for students to learn about the many interesting traditions of Chinese culture and the different world cultures at Harvard School of Public Health.

The objectives of The Chinese Cultural Club are to:

  • Help Chinese students who are new to the United States to adapt to the culture
  • Focus on the public health situation in China by holding discussions among faculty and students

Christian Student Fellowship

The  HSPH Christian Fellowship (HSPHHCP) seeks to love the Lord Jesus Christ with our heart, soul and mind and desire to show His love to others in tangible ways through activities at the School of Public Health and in the community.

HSPH Christian Fellowship aims to: 

  • Bring people together at HSPH into a community who desire to know God
  • Develop our potential as public health leaders in the Christian faith
  • Provide an open environment to explore God's truth

Student Dance Club

The Student Dance Club at HSPH aims to:

  • Provide an opportunity for dance-loving students at HSPH to learn and practice the skills of various kinds of dance
  • Develop and enjoy the art of dance by demonstrating the beauty of dance
  • Promote understanding of different dance cultures
  • Choose a dynamic lifestyle and balance life and study

The Environmental Health Student Club

The Environmental Health Student Club provide a space for discussions that highlight the application of science and the implications of these instruments in the occupational environment, advances in occupational medicine, environmental controversies and other topics that the membership and officers deem pertinent.  

The objectives of the Environmental Health Student Club are to: 

  • Provide the Harvard community with an open forum
  • Facilitate the discussion of Environmental Health issues which includes debates, speakers and panels on issues of environmental problems and their linkages to human health
  • Focus on policy, law and economic instruments that will help reduce and avoid the damages caused by environmental problems

Health Policy Forum

The HSPH Health Policy Forum aims to provide the Harvard community with an open forum which consists of debates, speakers and panels on the following issues facing United States domestic health policy:

  • Domestic health care management and economics
  • Health insurance for the under-served or uninsurable
  • Health care reform, tort reform, immigration and cross-cultural medicine
  • Alternative medicine and medical practice controversies
  • Other topics that the membership and officers deem pertinent to the membership.

The Health in Practice Student Organization

Health in Practice aims to:

  • Bring global health work to public health students by hosting global health practitioners in an informal setting to speak candidly about their experiences in the field
  • Complement students’ theoretical learning with opportunities to hear and interact with practitioners

Humanitarian Crisis Network (HCN) Student Organization

The Humanitarian Crisis Network (HCN) aims to:

  • Develop a community of students dedicated to the study and implementation of effective humanitarian intervention, disaster relief and crisis response operations 
  • Seeks to empower its members by developing professional networks, providing information related to current events and processes in these fields, and linking them with opportunities for engagement within and outside Harvard University.

Student Club of Japan

The HSPH Student Club of Japan mission is to:

  • Increase awareness and the understanding of Japanese public health and its culture
  • Offer seminars on Japanese public health issues by faculties, fellows or students
  • Research the link between lifestyle and public health
  • Compare the difference of these between U.S. and Japan
  • Support the development of the (official) HSPH Japanese alumni organization.

*The HSPH Student Club of Japan welcomes both Japanese and non-Japanese HSPH students, fellows, faculty, staff and alumni.

Jewish Student Association

The Jewish Student Association mission is to:

  • Bring together students interested in exploring issues of interest to the Jewish community by celebrating Jewish festivals and learning from one another
  • Foster a social atmosphere and a sense of community around Jewish culture and education by sponsoring events for HSPH students and participating in university-wide programs
*The HSPH Jewish Student Association is affiliated with CHAI, Harvard's university-wide Jewish Graduate Student Association of Harvard Hillel. Activities hosted by the HSPH Jewish Student Association and by CHAI are open to everyone.

Korean Students Group

The Korean Student Group at HSPH mission is to:

  • Provide a platform for active communication among Korean students and other HSPH students interested in Korean culture
  • Serve the interests of the members through academic and social networking events

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Association (LGBTA)

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Association (GBTA) was founded on National Coming Out Day, October 11, 1987 and is composed of HSPH students, faculty, and staff.  The mission of GBTA is to:

  • Provide support and space for interaction with other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender men and women
  • Educate GBTA members and the HSPH community about public health issues as they relate to gay and bisexual people, and other issues that affect our community
*Meetings and events are open to everyone; confidentiality of attendance and mailing lists are respected.

Mental Health Student Consortium

The HSPH Mental Health Student Consortium seeks to create an environment where students gather and contribute to each other's learning in the field of mental health at HSPH.

The Mental Health Consortium's mission is to:

  • Provide a supportive environment for students interested in mental health
  • Contribute to the HSPH community by promoting awareness of mental health and fostering intellectual discussion and stimulating thought on the varied areas of mental health
*Group membership is open to all students at HSPH who may view the group as an opportunity to interact with colleagues with diverse backgrounds in mental health. The group invites participation in activities from students and faculty from other Harvard graduate schools and the College, as well as the wider community.

Middle East and North Africa Group

The Middle East and North Africa Group at HSPH mission is to:

  • Share information and promote communication and awareness on topics related to public health in the Middle East
  • Host speakers from academic and public health institutions working at both regional, national, and international levels, as well as researchers on the Middle East who are based in U.S. institutions
  • Organize student events to share the diverse and the common cultures of the region through film, food, music, dance, and other traditional activities.
*This geographic region encompasses a number of heterogeneous countries that face unique and complex development and public health issues. All HSPH students interested in topics related to the Middle East are invited to join the group.

Muslim Student Group

The HSPH Muslim Student Group mission is to:

  • Raise awareness about public health issues in the Muslim World
  • Provide an Islamic environment for members to practice Islam as a way of life
  • Assist the broader community at HSPH with their spiritual, social, and intellectual endeavors

Student Society for Pharmacoepidemiology, Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research

The Student Society for Pharmacoepidemiology, Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR-HSPH) is a student organization affiliated with the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR). It strives to:

  • Provide an environment where students can share knowledge in pharmacoeconomics and health outcomes research
  • Serve as a bridge in bringing together students interested in pharmacoeconomics and members of the pharmaceutical industry, health-related organizations, and academia
  • Act as a resource for new students interested in pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research
  • Provide an opportunity for student chapter members to become familiar with the affairs of ISPOR as well as have representation in its affairs

Public Health and Technology (PHAT) Student Organization

The HSPH PHAT Forum aims to:

  • Provide an interactive forum for students to explore, connect and be leaders in the field of health, information and technology. 
  • Empower students to develop professional networks, to create and share opportunities for action, and to learn about developments in the field.

Public Health Intersections with Politics Student Group

Public Health Intersections with Politics (PHIP) mission is to:

  • Explore the ways that politics at the local, national and international level interact with both public health policies and challenges
  • Relate the causes of economic, environmental, and social disparities to their connections with health outcomes from an intra-national perspective
  • Analyze the relationships between countries, international organizations, and companies and the effect they have on population health
  • Host a variety of events that take advantage of the experiences and talents of Harvard Public Health students
  • Incorporate education and action in order to foster a holistic approach towards public health
*PHIP takes a critical stance at current circumstances with the purpose of stimulating ideas for improvement in the future.  Development of ideas and active involvement will be encouraged through holding events other than traditional lectures such as month-long event series, fundraisers, workshops, and an annual conference, all with student presenters as well as organizers.

Reel Epi

The mission of the Reel Epi is to provide a forum for exchange of epidemiologic concepts between HSPH students and faculty through film.

Student Group for Reproductive Health and Rights

The Student Group for Reproductive Health and Rights (SGRHR) mission is to:

  • Provide a forum for discourse on reproductive health and rights at Harvard School of Public Health
  • Increase awareness, advocacy and action at HSPH and beyond around issues of international and domestic health and human rights

Social Entrepreneurs in Health (SEIH) Student Organization

 Harvard Social Entrepreneurs in Health (SEIH) Student Organization aims to:

  • Provide every student with the inspiration, skills, experiences, and networks needed to make a social impact through innovation and entrepreneurial pursuits in the fields of medicine and public health
  • Collaborate with university initiatives to offer a range of programs in pursuit of the group's mission, from social networking events, speakers series and career workshops to fieldwork and project
  • Partnership with other schools and organizations in the Boston area to provide students with interdisciplinary social entrepreneurship opportunities

The HSPH Student Spanish Speaking Organization  mission is to:

  • Bring together native-speakers and individuals seeking to practice their Spanish language skills in a friendly and relaxed environment

  • Provide information on events that may interest the Spanish-speaking community within Harvard University and the Boston area
  • Acts on behalf of Spanish-speaking students at HSPH in matters concerning their education and welfare

Students Against the War

HSPH Students Against the War is a student group dedicated to education and organizing around public health dimensions of the Iraq War. The US invasion and continued occupation of Iraq has resulted in the deaths of over one million Iraqis and  several thousand Americans. There is an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Iraq; a care crisis for returning veterans; a budgetary crisis that has led to cuts in social services in the US; and a crisis for Iraqi self-determination.

HSPH SAW has planned forums and attended events in Boston.

YanXinQigong (YXQ) Student Group

The HSPH YanXinQigong (YXQ) Association mission is to: 

  • Provide an environment and interdisciplinary forum for students, staff and faculty members who are interested in exploring the scientific nature of YanXinQigong (the foremost representative of traditional Chinese Qigong) and its meaning toward public health as well as the society
*The YXQ Association is an educational and research organization holding regular seminars and meetings.
